S.T.A.N.D. Sacramento Taking Action Against Nicotine Dependence

STAND is working to educate, empower, and organize young adults (ages 18-29) and college students to demand Smoke-Free housing and to reduce the exposure to secondhand smoke. STAND will encourage multi-unit housing complexes that cater to the young adult population to implement Smoke-Free policies.

In a survey of young adults at California State University, Northridge, 60% of respondents said they had experienced tobacco smoke drifting into their apartment from another apartment or from outside. Additionally, 97% agreed that secondhand tobacco smoke can be a health hazard. (Survey conducted by S.A.F.E (Smokefree Air for Everyone), Spring 2001.)

Secondhand smoke is the third leading cause of preventable death in the United States, killing 53,000 nonsmokers each year. Glantz, S.A., and W. Parmley, “passive Smoking and Heart Disease: Epidemiology, Physiology and Biochemistry,” Circulation 83 (1): 10 (1991)

You should have the choice of Smoke-Free housing. Ask your current complex to become Smoke-Free. Or when looking for your next apartment, check out www.smokefreeapartments.org to find Smoke-Free complexes in your area.
